................. Index is made up of 106 wood panels, each 4 X 6” in size, screen-printed to resemble index cards, and organized into seven separate pieces. One of these pieces, titled A to Annoy, contains images culled from the pages of an old set of encyclopedias. In encyclopedias, telephone books and the like, we find things through a system of alphabetical ordering. This system is universally understood in our culture and is book related. It is not the way we search for things on a computer. When volume or page headings are amusing, or even poetic, we notice the arbitrary connections.
